Driving from Colombo to Kandy, the ride is refreshingly scenic – long winding roads, spice gardens along the way and green mountains all around courtesy of the slightly higher altitude.
I was taking my umpteenth time-lapse video when this rock mountain dawned on the horizon. Naturally, I asked uncle Upali about it. And as almost always, he had an interesting story to share.
The rock is called Uthuwankanda and what makes it famous, or should I say infamous, is that it was once the hideaway of Sri Lanka’s very own Robin Hood – Sura Saradiel.
Like the heroic thief, Sura Saradiel stole from the rich and gave to the poor. He was caught after somebody gave away his secret spot to the police. Uncle Upali said that the villagers were more than upset at this. Well, that’s not too surprising, is it?
