Growing up, I moved around a bit. Born in Bangalore, I attended nursery (playschool) in Mumbai, kindergarten in Chennai, grades 1 to 3 in Hyderabad and grades 4 to 7 in Dubai. Then it was Bangalore again till grade 12, Mumbai again for my Bachelor’s degree, Dubai again for my Master’s degree and the start of my career and finally, I was/am back to square one – Bangalore, where I continue to work.
So when people asked me where I’m from, I was always at a slight loss. My mother was born in Kerala but raised in Bangalore and lived there all her life till she met my wayfaring father. My father, on the other hand, was born and raised in Hyderabad until he started working, and that’s when all the moving began. And we’re Tamilians, but we’re not really from Tamil Nadu. Yes, we have some ancestral connection to the state but nothing too recent that I can relate to.
However, when we would take our annual vacation to Dubai (the first time there), it would always be to Bangalore. Eventually, my parents bought an apartment here and we’ve called it home ever since. My family friends including my oldest friend live here, most of our relatives live here and I made my first set of best friends here. Bangalore is also the only place I’ve lived the longest. Every where else has been four years or less.
Now, when people ask me where I’m from, I don’t bat an eyelid before I say, Bangalore.
Unfortunately, and like with almost all the cities I’ve lived in, I don’t know my hometown too well. I don’t know its history or culture like the back of my hand, I’m unaware of its hidden haunts and I’ve only heard of its famous spots. Sure, I know my way around most of the city and if you ask me what the newest restaurant in town is, I’ll probably know. But I’d be lying if I said I really know my hometown? Except for a few words here and there, I can’t even speak the language.
As you can tell, I’m quite the disappointment as a resident. I wouldn’t dare to call myself a local. Not yet, anyway.
Which is why I’m going on a mission, starting a journey, setting off on a path – whatever you would like to call it – to explore Bangalore and learn about it as much as I can. Because while there is a whole world (Happy Earth Day, by the way) out there for me to discover, there’s also my city, to which I happily return at the end of all my travels.

Ah.. I miss Bangalore. I lived there for 29 years and now moved to Hyderabad! Your post was a nice read!

I’m not sure which category I fit in, I lived in Bangalore for a few years but had to move… But I miss the city, so damn much!

I don’t think it matters whether you fit into a category. The attachment to the city and the memories you make are what count, according to me.
What do you miss most about the Bangalore?

Trust me, that’s the best part… One of the best public transport services I’ve ever seen.. I used to come back home at around 7 or 8 p.m. by bus.. And with my earphones plugged in and the beautiful Bangalore weather, the 2 hour journey used to be like ‘makkhan’ 😀

I haven’t travelled too much by bus in Bangalore so I’ll take your word on it. I don’t mean to put down my own city but I’m surprised you’re not complaining about traffic! That and the roads are some of our biggest problems. And of late, the weather has been uncharacteristically bad 😦 sigh.

Yeah the weather has changed a lot since then… but I don’t really mind the traffic or the roads. Also, I used to take routes with less chances of much traffic!

I think you deserve some kind of tolerance award for saying you don’t mind the traffic. Lol! Where do you live now?

Hey!
Just a quick suggestion… Today, that is 24 April 2016 is ‘last’ day for celebration of one of Bengaluru’s oldest and continuously practised festival ‘karaga’. Don’t miss this traditional Bengaluru’s cultural fest!!
Good luck (& take care since the celebration takes place in the night)

Hey Jayanth, thank you so much for your suggestion. Can you tell me where I can check out the festival, if there is a particular place? Would love some more details!

Dharmarayaswamy temple in Thigalarapete is the main place. Since its procession we can see the celebration in other places too and it will be from midnight to early morning . Google will provide more info in that case regarding particular places and timings !

Ohhh I wish I knew earlier. That sounds so nice but midnight today might not be a possibility for me 😦 let me run a Google search anyway. Thanks again Jayanth 🙂 If you’ve got anymore suggestions, do keep me posted.

I have to say I can relate to what you said about not feeling like a “local” yet. I’ve never felt like a locl anywhere I’ve lived!
I wish you fun and joyful discovery as you (finally) explore your designated hometown. 🙂
